No market exists on this, so I read the next-best tape: a finished edition, a society, a journal in its third decade, the Met staging the opera in March 2025. That tape says the book stays on the board. I give Translated Canon 42–56%. I do not call it a lock.

Key evidence · No liquid market on any version of the question (swept 2026-10-24). Strongest rival, Hollowed Canon at 18–28%, fails to break the tape: the edition, society and journal are all still printing.

Multiply it out. First rank holds at about 0.89. Reading base survives at about 0.75. That is about 0.67 intact, less 0.12 for providence re-centred and 0.05 for a find that settles it. What is left is about 0.50. I take the band, 42–56%, because the factors move together.

Key evidence · Decomposition lands at ~0.50. Strongest non-favorite path: Hollowed Canon, 18–28%, three decompositions at 17–27%. It stays below A because it needs both a reading fall and a pipeline cut.

Five regimes of reading since 1851, gaps of 68, 31, 35 and 20 years, and the book outlived every one. Seven of eight first-rank American authors of 1900 are gone from the core; none had an edition, a society, a journal. Melville has all three. The count says he holds and the vocabulary turns once more.

Key evidence · 0 of 4 lock-in authors lost core status in 25 years (Laplace ~17%). Strongest non-favorite path: Demoted Classic, 7–14%; the 7-of-8 count belongs to authors without lock-in.

Key evidence · Humanities degrees 164,847 in 2024, 30.4% below 2012 high; English share 7.6% to ~2.8% (1971–2021) in one series. Moby-Dick absent from the titles reaching 20% of high school courses.

These are proven keepers, and they have motive to keep the book alive. I back the canon that holds and the question that changes its clothes.

Key evidence · Edition finished 2017 after 15 volumes; Leviathan vol. 28 no. 2 (June 2026). Strongest non-favorite path: Hollowed Canon, 18–28%, fails only if the keepers' funding holds; dues cover about half the journal's cost.

Everyone agrees the question will be translated into ecology and machines. Fine. But a translation is also a way of keeping the question alive, and the book is about a man who reads malice or order into a white blank. If the plateau in Pew's numbers holds, this one comes back as the old argument, not a new vocabulary. At 8–15% it is cheap.

Key evidence · Pew nones 16% to 29% (2007 to 2023–24), flat since about 2020; ~2 religion-tied realignments of Melville readings in ~100 years. Band 8–15%.

02The Consensus

The callMelville keeps first-rank standing and the providence question persists in translated form: indifferent nature, slavery and empire, unchecked will. Translated Canon sits at 42–56%. The edition is finished, the society and journal are in their third decade, the opera played the Met in March 2025, and no counted lock-in author lost core status in 25 years. The weakest point is the reading base under the rank, which is why Hollowed Canon is a live second.

Why over the runner-upHollowed Canon needs two things at once: a sustained fall in unmediated reading and a shrinkage deep enough to cut the Melville pipeline by a third. Three decompositions put that at 17–27%. Translated Canon needs only that the existing institutions keep running at reduced scale.

Strongest surviving dissentRowan Wayfinder's case: reputation is lagging evidence. Humanities degrees are 30.4% below the 2012 peak, Moby-Dick was never a high school staple, and the readers who sustain a canon are being removed at a rate the institutions have not yet absorbed. On that reading Hollowed Canon is the modal path and the margin is thin.

03The Outcomes — 5 scenarios, priced by the research

Translated Canon42–56%

Melville keeps first-rank standing and Moby-Dick stays the lead candidate for the great American novel, taught in college surveys and sustained by a society, a journal and a finished edition, at reduced but functioning scale. Providence survives, but translated: the old question of whether Melville believed in a governing God is asked as a question about indifferent nature, slavery and empire, and unchecked will, including machine will. The Calvinist and theodicy reading persists as a historicist specialty. No consensus forms; the book stays an inquiry that refuses to certify an answer.

How this number was derived
Decomposition. P(first-rank standing holds to 2050) ~0.89: authors with an edition, society and journal that lost core status inside 25 years number 0 of 4 (Melville, Twain, Dickinson, Whitman; Laplace 1/6, ~17%), shaded toward the 5-10% that the decompositions give for outright demotion. x P(reading base and field not hollowed | standing holds) ~0.75 (three independent decompositions put hollowing at 17-27%) = ~0.67 intact standing. Less providence re-centred (~0.12) and evidence-settled (~0.05) = ~0.50. Range 42-56% keeps the lower (38-50%) and higher (48-60%) estimates in view; the factors are positively correlated, which argues against tightening.

Drivers

  • Institutional lock-in: the Melville Society, Leviathan (vol. 28 no. 2, June 2026), the Northwestern-Newberry edition finished in 2017 after 15 volumes, and the 2019 bicentennial
  • Reframing absorbs new questions without displacing the book: five interpretive regimes since 1851 with gaps of 68, 31, 35 and 20 years
  • Metaphor availability: Ahab as the figure of obsession and unchecked will, the whale as an emblem of indifferent nature
  • Living afterlife: the Heggie opera at the Met in March 2025, Paris stage run in early 2026
  • A question the evidence cannot close: the letters and Hawthorne's 1856 notebook leave belief undecidable

Signals to watch

  • Open Syllabus ranking of Moby-Dick among assigned fiction at the next release (~2030)
  • Whether a third or more of new Melville scholarship in 2026-2030 foregrounds ecology, empire or AI rather than theology
  • Continued three-issue-a-year publication of Leviathan at current page count
  • Any stabilisation of NCES humanities degree share across two consecutive years
Horizon · Distinguishable from the alternatives by about 2035; confirmed or broken by 2050.
Hollowed Canon18–28%

Melville keeps nominal rank, but the pipeline that sustains it contracts. Humanities and English departments shrink further, fewer people read the book whole, and AI summaries, adaptations and excerpts replace first reading. The Melville Society and journal persist at a fraction of current size. Moby-Dick is still cited as the great novel; the providence debate migrates to public and machine-mediated commentary and thins as scholarship. Ahab and the white whale circulate as meme more than as a read text.

How this number was derived
Decomposition, three independent routes. (1) P(sustained fall in unmediated long-form reading among the college-educated by 2040) 0.55 x P(department shrinkage cuts the Melville pipeline by a third or more | fall) 0.45 x P(AI mediation dominant | both) 0.7 = 17%. (2) P(humanities pipeline contracts further) 0.60 x P(contraction reaches readership and scholarly capacity) 0.45 = 27%. (3) P(contraction at or beyond the 2000-24 rate) 0.45 x P(it erodes Melville's instruction base) 0.45 = 20%. Centre ~22%; range 18-28% since the audiobook counter-signal and repeated failed predictions of reading's death cut against the top of the range.

Drivers

  • Humanities degrees at 164,847 in 2024, 30.4% below the 2012 peak; humanities share 8.1% in 2025, lowest since 1987
  • English share of bachelor's degrees 7.6% (1971) to about 2.8% (2021) in one IPEDS-based series, 4.5% (2000-01) to 1.7% (2023-24) in another; sources disagree on levels, agree on direction
  • Moby-Dick already absent from the high school titles reaching 20% of courses (2010 teacher survey)
  • Summary, audiobook and AI-tutor substitution for first reading
  • Funding pressure on university presses and the NEH

Signals to watch

  • IPEDS/NCES completions: humanities share below 6% by 2032
  • MLA job list below half its 2019 level
  • Melville Society membership or Leviathan subscription change of more than 30% in five years
  • US time-use and NEA leisure-reading series: two straight years of rebound would lower this scenario
Horizon · Visible in enrollment and syllabus data by about 2032; settled by 2040-2050.
Providence Returns8–15%

Standing holds and a post-secular, political-theological or AI-eschatological turn makes divine governance, fate and purpose the live public question again. Moby-Dick is read as its central American text, and scholarship swings back toward Calvinist, Hawthorne-notebook and doctrinal readings with new energy. Providence stops being period background and becomes the organizing frame, in scholarship, in public reading, or both.

How this number was derived
Decomposition cross-checked against a count. P(intact standing) ~0.67 x P(a shift reorients readers to providence as the frame | intact) ~0.18 = ~12%. The count: about 2 religion-tied realignments that reshaped Melville readings in about 100 years (mid-century theological readings; 1970s-80s Puritan turn) = 0.02/yr, so ~38% for any such shift in 24 years, x ~0.3 that providence becomes central rather than a strand = ~11%. Pew's plateau (Christian share ~60-62% since about 2020) lifts it above a 4% three-factor chain; Gallup's God-belief drop (87% to 81%) pulls it down.

Drivers

  • Anxiety about AI as ungoverned will and climate as indifferent or ordered nature
  • Renewed religious seeking among the unaffiliated, if the Pew plateau holds (nones 16% to 29% 2007 to 2023-24, flat since about 2020)
  • Post-secular and political-theology scholarship
  • Ahab's monomania as the metaphor that drags readers back to the cosmic quarrel

Signals to watch

  • Two successive Pew or Gallup waves with belief or affiliation stable or rising
  • A Leviathan special issue or major monograph by a leading scholar centered on providence or theodicy by 2030
  • Providence or theodicy language in public AI-risk argument citing Ahab
  • Religious-college and divinity-school Melville courses growing against a falling base
Horizon · A turn would show first in scholarship by about 2035-2040; public reading follows by 2050.
Demoted Classic7–14%

Melville falls from the first rank. A diversified canon, shorter assigned works and the slow loss of whaling and biblical literacy leave Moby-Dick a respected but optional classic, still in anthologies, no longer the book a literate American is expected to have read. Or the book is displaced as the American-novel anchor by Beloved, Invisible Man, Huckleberry Finn or a non-Anglophone work, or as the leading providence text by another author. Providence becomes a footnote to an author who has slipped.

How this number was derived
Reference class plus decomposition, with the range straddling two anchors that disagree. Count: of 8 US authors top-tier in 1900-1920 (Longfellow, Whittier, Lowell, Holmes, Bryant, Cooper, Howells, Harte), 7 had fallen from the core by 1976, ~88% over ~75 years, but all lacked an edition, society and journal. Lock-in authors lost core status in 0 of 4 cases in 25 years, Laplace ~17%. Decompositions give 5-10% (P(severe pipeline contraction) 0.60 x P(it displaces Melville specifically) 0.15 = 9%; apex-slot displacement ~3 in 25 per generation, lowered to 5-9%). Range 7-14%. Hand tallies, not a census.

Drivers

  • Canon expansion crowding survey syllabi
  • Teaching shift toward shorter works
  • Whaling and biblical literacy collapse increasing the reader's distance
  • Other authors absorbing the providence theme

Signals to watch

  • Moby-Dick outside the top 10 assigned fiction, or outside the top 50 in college syllabi, at the next Open Syllabus release
  • Loss of a Melville seat in standard survey anthologies
  • Great American Novel polls placing another title first for a decade
  • Contraction of the Melville Society or Leviathan
Horizon · Early evidence by about 2035 in syllabus data; confirmed by 2045-2050.
Evidence Settles It3–7%

A find or archival reframing changes what Melville is believed to have thought about providence: new letters or journals, the lost Bayle volume or marginalia, the lost Isle of the Cross manuscript, or a datable-layer result on how Moby-Dick was composed. The result is decisive enough that a working consensus forms where none has existed, in whichever direction the evidence points. Standing is not the issue here; the reading is.

How this number was derived
Decomposition from a hand count. Canon-reshaping Melville finds since 1920: 1 clear case (the Billy Budd manuscript, found 1919-20) and 1 partial (52 added letters in the 1993 correspondence volume), so 0.01-0.019/yr; over 24 years expected 0.23-0.45 finds, P(at least one) 21-36%. x P(bears decisively on belief | find) 0.2-0.3 = 4-11%. x P(it settles a consensus instead of adding another camp) ~0.6 = ~3-7%. Digital recovery of erased annotations raises the find rate modestly; most attics are already searched.

Drivers

  • Digital imaging of erased annotations in Melville's books
  • Estate, auction and attic provenance surfacing unlocated volumes
  • Editorial projects of the Melville Society

Signals to watch

  • Announcement of a Melville-owned volume or manuscript bearing on belief
  • New letters or journal entries from the Gansevoort-Melville circle
  • Follow-up marginalia recoveries after the 2015 Milton results
Horizon · Hazard roughly flat to 2050; any single year carries about 0.2-0.3%.

Probabilities are the research's own scenario bands, priced as outcomes. The full argument — history, current state, drivers, and sources — lives in the corpus: read the Future Trajectory chapter.

05What Would Change the Call

  1. Open Syllabus snapshot near 2030 placing Moby-Dick outside the top 10 assigned fiction would raise Demoted Classic toward 12-16%; outside the top 50 in college syllabi, toward 15-20%.
  2. Humanities share of US bachelor's degrees below 6% by 2032, or the MLA job list below half its 2019 level, would raise Hollowed Canon to 32-38%; two consecutive flat years would move 4-6 points from Hollowed Canon to Translated Canon.
  3. Two successive Pew or Gallup waves showing belief or affiliation stable or rising would add 4-5 points to Providence Returns.
  4. A Leviathan special issue or major monograph by a leading scholar centered explicitly on providence or theodicy before 2030 would add 3-5 points to Providence Returns.
  5. Announcement of a newly found Melville-owned volume or manuscript bearing on belief (the Bayle volume, Isle of the Cross) would lift Evidence Settles It to about 20% for the following decade.
  6. A fall of more than 30% in Melville Society membership or Leviathan subscriptions within five years would add 8-10 points to Hollowed Canon.
  7. Two straight years of rising US adult leisure reading would lower Hollowed Canon toward 14%.
  8. A prediction market on canon standing or the great American novel opening with real volume would re-anchor the Translated Canon versus Hollowed Canon split.

The modal scenario sits near 49%, so it is about as likely as not to be the one that happens, and the four rivals together carry roughly half the weight. The hand tallies behind the ranges are small, and the horizon is 24 years.
